How to Compress Video for WhatsApp (16MB Limit)

WhatsApp limits video attachments to 16MB. A typical 1-minute phone video is already 80-150MB, so it gets blocked before it even tries to send. AVMint can shrink any video to fit under 16MB while keeping it watchable.

1

Open the Video Compress tool

Go to AVMint's Compress tool and drop your video. WhatsApp accepts MP4, so the output format is set automatically.

2

Set the target size to 16MB

Choose the 16MB preset (or enter a custom value just under 16MB to leave headroom). AVMint calculates the exact bitrate from the video duration to hit the target.

3

Compress and send

Click Compress. Once the file is ready, save it to your phone (via AirDrop, USB, or cloud sync) and attach it in WhatsApp. It will upload without the 'file too large' error.

Tip

If a 16MB result looks too pixelated, lower the resolution to 480p in Advanced Settings. Phone screens are small enough that 480p still looks acceptable, and you get much more bitrate per pixel.

FAQ

Can I send a 5-minute video on WhatsApp?

Yes, but at 16MB / 5 minutes you're working with very low bitrate, so quality will suffer. Consider trimming to the highlights, or send it via a link instead (Google Drive, iCloud Share).

Does WhatsApp recompress my video again after sending?

WhatsApp may apply additional compression, especially on mobile data. Starting with a clean H.264 MP4 from AVMint gives the best chance of surviving WhatsApp's transcode.
